“Contained?” Robot Dies 3 Hours After Entering Fukushima Reactor

We are sure this is nothing to worry about… and Japanese officials will re-iterate that everything is on track but when a snake-like robot sent to inspect a reactor containment vessel at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant dies three hours into the operation, one might wonder just how “contained” the radiation situations really is.

Fukushima Radiation Detected Off California Coast

November 12, 2014 |
The Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant experienced a meltdown following the earthquake that hit Japan in March 2011, dumping cesium-134 into the Pacific Ocean and causing spectacular concern about what would happen when the radiation made its way over to North America. That day has finally come, according to scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). Traces of the radiation have been detected 160 km (100 miles) off the coast of Northern California, but the levels are far too low to present any immediate health risks.
Ken Buesseler is a marine chemist from WHOI and is heading up the monitoring project. He will be presenting the findings at the annual meeting of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry in Vancouver on Thursday. While Buesseler is monitoring the cesium from Fukushima, he also monitors that which has been present in the water for decades.
"Most people don't realize that there was already cesium in Pacific waters prior to Fukushima, but only the cesium-137 isotope,” Buesseler said in a press release. “Cesium-137 undergoes radioactive decay with a 30-year half-life and was introduced to the environment during atmospheric weapons testing in the 1950s and '60s. Along with cesium-137, we detected cesium-134 – which also does not occur naturally in the environment and has a half-life of just two years. Therefore the only source of this cesium-134 in the Pacific today is from Fukushima.”
WHOI states that the Fukushima radiation found near California exists in levels lower than 2 Becquerels per cubic meter. The EPA has deemed that levels as high as 7400 becquerels per cubic meter are perfectly safe for drinking water. Even if someone spent considerable time in the water for a year, the radiation dosage is 1000 times lower compared to getting a regular x-ray at the dentist. These levels are deemed much too low to to cause immediate adverse effects in humans who might swim in the water or marine animals who live in it.
Over time, however, the radiation levels could build up in larger fish who regularly consume smaller fish. Fish caught for human consumption in the Pacific have shown increased levels of radiation following Fukushima’s meltdown, but are still nowhere near the levels that should be cause for concern.
So far, the radiation has not reached any shores in North America, and predicting if and when that could happen isn’t entirely clear. Models suggest that the radiation will turn south along the coast, but there is some ambiguity in those predictions.
"We don't know exactly when the Fukushima isotopes will be detectable closer to shore because the mixing of offshore surface waters and coastal waters is hard to predict. Mixing is hindered by coastal currents and near-shore upwelling of colder deep water," Buesseler continued. "We stand to learn more from samples taken this winter when there is generally less upwelling, and exchange between coastal and offshore waters maybe enhanced.”
There are no U.S. federal agencies tasked with monitoring ocean radiation levels, and Buesseler has led crowdfunding efforts and seeks citizen scientist volunteers to take and process samples. Earlier this week, he answered questions on Reddit.

CDC: Radioisotope Brief: Cesium-137 (Cs-137)
Radioisotope Brief: Cesium-137 (Cs-137)How can it hurt me?
External exposure to large amounts of Cs-137 can cause burns, acute radiation sickness, and even death. Exposure to Cs-137 can increase the risk for cancer because of exposure to high-energy gamma radiation. Internal exposure to Cs-137, through ingestion or inhalation, allows the radioactive material to be distributed in the soft tissues, especially muscle tissue, exposing these tissues to the beta particles and gamma radiation and increasing cancer risk.

Thorium
Thorium: the wonder fuel that wasn't l Bob Alvarez l Bulletin of the Atomic ScientistsRobert Alvarez Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists 12 May, 2014
Excellent article from Bob Alvarez on why thorium is not the wonder fuel it's being promoted as and a brief history of the US's persistent failure in making thorium safe or efficient ending with the expected trail of dangerous, weaponizable, waste.
"...the United States has tried to develop thorium as an energy source for some 50 years and is still struggling to deal with the legacy of those attempts. In addition to the billions of dollars it spent, mostly fruitlessly, to develop thorium fuels, the US government will have to spend billions more, at numerous federal nuclear sites, to deal with the wastes produced by those efforts. And America’s energy-from-thorium quest now faces an ignominious conclusion: The US Energy Department appears to have lost track of 96 kilograms of uranium 233, a fissile material made from thorium that can be fashioned into a bomb, and is battling the state of Nevada over the proposed dumping of nearly a ton of left-over fissile materials in a government landfill, in apparent violation of international standards..."
...
"The federal government established research and development projects to demonstrate the viability of uranium 233 breeder reactors in Minnesota, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania. By 1977, however, the government abandoned pursuit of the thorium fuel cycle in favor of plutonium-fueled breeders, leading to dissent in the ranks of the AEC. Alvin Weinberg, the long-time director of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, was, in large part, fired because of his support of thorium over plutonium fuel.
By the late 1980’s, after several failed attempts to use it commercially, the US nuclear power industry also walked away from thorium. The first commercial nuclear plant to use thorium was Indian Point Unit I, a pressurized water reactor near New York City that began operation in 1962. Attempts to recover uranium 233 from its irradiated thorium fuel were described, however, as a “financial disaster.” The last serious attempt to use thorium in a commercial reactor was at the Fort St. Vrain plant in Colorado, which closed in 1989 after 10 years and hundreds of equipment failures, leaks, and fuel failures. There were four failed commercial thorium ventures; prior agreement makes the US government responsible for their wastes."

Fukushima radioactive water ‘ice plug’ plan fails
Japan seeks new ways of stopping hundreds
of tons of water being contaminated with radiation
Julian Ryall in Tokyo
1:46PM BST 20 Aug 2014
The operator of Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant has conceded defeat in its effort to create a frozen plug in a tunnel to stop water flowing into the No. 2 reactor building and becoming contaminated with radiation.
Since early June, engineers from Tokyo Electric Power Co. have injected more than 400 tons of ice and dry ice into the tunnel in an effort to freeze a section of the passage solid.
Halting the flow of water through the tunnel, which was originally used to run cables into the reactor’s turbine building, would have made it possible to pump highly radioactive water out to be treated.
Tepco said that it will now experiment with cement and other sealant materials in an effort to stop the water moving through the tunnel, as well as installing a filter to try to slow the flow of water.
Officials of the Nuclear Regulation Agency and other atomic energy experts have raised doubts as to whether that proposal will be effective.
When Tepco began the process of freezing the water in tunnels at the site, officials described the move as “a major milestone” in the decommissioning of the plant, which was devastated by a magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.
Officials have also emphasised that the failure of the effort to freeze water in the tunnels is not connected with the construction of an impermeable wall of soil frozen with chemicals on the landward side of the plant in order to stop groundwater seeping into the reactor buildings and becoming contaminated before escaping into the Pacific Ocean.
“The difficulties encountered in freezing the contaminated water does not in any way represent a ‘setback’ in development of the ice wall, for which construction is proceeding as planned,” Tepco said in a statement.

Fukushima disaster shows effects of radiation in animals, plants: Study

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster of 2011 is believed to have leaked significant amounts of radiation that may have affected animals and plants in the region.
The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster of 2011 is believed to have leaked significant amounts of radiation that may have affected animals and plants in the region.
The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant is located in Japan and was commissioned in 1971. The nuclear power plant was severely damaged after an earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale hit the region in March 2011. Since the calamity, the nuclear power plant has been disabled.
The damage at Fukushima was so high that the plant released radioactive material in the air and the government announced evacuation of 30 kilometers of area around the nuclear plant.
A recent study suggests that the radioactive material released in the air by the Fukushima nuclear disaster has led to widespread negative effects such as population decline and genetic damage in the animals, insects and wildlife of the region.
The researchers gave an example of the pale grass blue butterfly, which is a prevalent type of butterfly species found in Japan. The effect of radiation in the Fukushima region has led to the reduction in size of this species of butterfly. The pale grass blue butterfly is also experiencing slow growth and a high mortality rate in the region surrounding the Fukushima nuclear plant.
The scientists cite the Chernobyl disaster that occurred in April 1986 in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine and say that government agencies should compare the after effects of Chernobyl disaster and take relevant precautionary measures to stop further damage and revive the wildlife of areas surrounding the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.
The researchers also gave an example of barn swallows found both near the Chernobyl disaster and Fukushima disaster areas. Researchers found that these birds found near the region of Chernobyl disaster developed unusual white spots on their plumage. Some researchers have found that barn swallows in the Fukushima disaster region are also showing similar traits with abnormal plumage.
A previous report also says that Japanese macaques, a species of monkey native to Japan, near the Fukushima disaster site showed low level of red and white blood corpuscles as well as declined levels of hemoglobin. The scientists suggest that the low blood cells in these monkeys may have been caused by radiation effects of the Fukushima disaster.
Dr. Timothy Mousseau of the University of South Carolina and lead author of one of the studies suggests that detailed analysis on the natural population of the Fukushima area can help to find more information, which can help to predict recovery of the wildlife in the region.
“There is an urgent need for greater investment in basic scientific research of the wild animals and plants of Fukushima,” says Mousseau.

TOP EXPERTS WARN OF
‘INEVITABLE’ FUKUSHIMA DISASTER IN CALIFORNIA
Experts warn of 'American Fukushima' in California unless immediate action is taken
by ANTHONY GUCCIARDI | INFOWARS.COM | SEPTEMBER 3, 2014
34712728
Since the catastrophic meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear power plant in March of 2011 irreparably altered the state of the planet for the known future, the incident has been shrouded in nothing but bureaucratic cover ups and government-backed disinformation. Now, within our own borders, top experts turned whistle blowers are warning of a nuclear nightmare that could surpass Fukushima and Chernobyl alike by leaps and bounds.
Initially listed as a Level 4 incident on the International Nuclear Event Scale, pressure from scientists on an international level ultimately led to Fukushima’s classification as a maximum Level 7 accident within the INES system. Now, even after witnessing what happens when a major power plant is placed within the crosshairs of serious earthquake activity, a ‘new American Fukushima’ may be sitting off the Central Coast within California’s Diablo Canyon.
And top level nuclear experts, including a senior federal nuclear inspector turned whistleblower, are warning that the California-based plant is a sitting radioactive duck amid the nearby faults that have actually been found to be more dangerous than previously thought. Back in 2008, a new fault known as the Shoreline fault was discovered just offshore from the Diablo Canyon nuclear facility: a discovery that truly changes everything about the ‘safety’ of the California plant.
The whistleblower and former federal inspector of the plant, Michael Peck, has even presented his case highlighting the serious hazards of the plant he used to oversee to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in a highly confidential report. National organizations are already calling attention to Peck’s finding and reports, with senior strategist Damon Moglen of Friends of the Earth International stating:
“We agree with him that Diablo Canyon is vulnerable to earthquakes and must be shut down immediately. Rather than the NRC keeping this a secret, there must be a thorough investigation with public hearings to determine whether these reactors can operate safely.”
Yet it appears that the general public is not even being made aware of what’s really going on, let alone the real threat that they face on a national and international level. Infowars reporter Lee Ann Mcadoo recently traveled to the very location of the Diablo Canyon nuclear site, where residents and visitors alike were shocked to learn about what the experts had to say regarding their local nuclear power plant:
As usual, the general public is not being told about ways in which they can prepare themselves for a nuclear meltdown. Instead, government officials were caught back in February stockpiling iodine stores in excess of 14 million doses in a purchase order that came conveniently after reports began surfacing over another possible meltdown at the Fukushima plant. The doses will be enough for many officials and federal employees, however the public will be forced to fend for themselves — and they will not even be told about the necessity of iodine nor how they can better prepare their families for a radioactive scenario.
The reality is that even getting a hold of low quality potassium iodide, which I would not ever personally take over a higher quality form of pure iodine, is becoming difficult as the population becomes aware of Fukushima’s expansive dangers. Many manufacturers are now stockpiling raw iodine and holding on to the element as a form of investment with the knowledge that Fukushima may very well meltdown in the coming months. For this reason, we have had a very hard time securing our nascent iodine formula that many in the field of preparedness have been stockpiling for quite some time.
Fukushima Radiation Continues As Experts Warn Of ‘American Fukushima’But even outside out Peck’s analysis and years of experience as a nuclear inspector at the federal level, numerous high level scientists and researchers have been speaking out about the continuation of Fukushima’s devastating effects and the need to further stabilize and shutdown nuclear plants along the fault lines throughout the United States — and California is not the only region in question. Even another earthquake affecting Japan could lead to the ‘evacuation of North America’, according to scientists David Suzuki.
In statements made during a presentation on water ecology at the University of Alberta, award winning scientist David Suzuki went on record in saying that in the event of another seven or above earthquake, which he says has about a 95% chance of occurring over the next three years, it would require a complete evacuation of North America and mean ‘bye bye Japan’.
“I have seen a paper which says that if in fact the fourth plant goes under in an earthquake and those rods are exposed, it’s bye bye Japan and everybody on the west coast of North America should evacuate,” he said.
Specifically speaking to the nature of Fukushima’s ticking time bomb, Suzuki began the breakdown of the plant’s numerous threats with stating the very real concept that Fukushima is perhaps the largest threat to both humanity and the planet that we face in the immediate future.
“Fukushima is the most terrifying situation I can imagine,” he said before delving into the issue. “Three out of the four plants were destroyed in the earthquake and in the tsunami. The fourth one has been so badly damaged that the fear is, if there’s another earthquake of a seven or above that, that building will go and then all hell breaks loose… And the probability of a seven or above earthquake in the next three years is over 95 per cent.”
And Suzuki is not the only one with major concerns. In fact, Suzuki is perhaps one of the very few who actually received media attention due to his celebrity status as a recipient of 16 significant academic awards and host of the popular CBC Television program entitled ‘The Nature of Things’. Yale University professor Charles Perrow has voiced similar concerns in a telling piece entitled ‘Fukushima Forever’, which highlights the very serious threat of nuclear meltdown as a result of human error when it comes to removing the plant’s spent fuel rods.
A danger that the United States government certainly recognizes as legitimate based on the analysis of top experts, and undoubtedly is silently preparing for behind the scenes.
Perrow writes:
Much more serious is the danger that the spent fuel rod pool at the top of the nuclear plant number four will collapse in a storm or an earthquake, or in a failed attempt to carefully remove each of the 1,535 rods and safely transport them to the common storage pool 50 meters away. Conditions in the unit 4 pool, 100 feet from the ground, are perilous, and if any two of the rods touch it could cause a nuclear reaction that would be uncontrollable. The radiation emitted from all these rods, if they are not continually cool and kept separate, would require the evacuation of surrounding areas including Tokyo. Because of the radiation at the site the 6,375 rods in the common storage pool could not be continuously cooled; they would fission and all of humanity will be threatened, for thousands of years.
The Fukushima nuclear nightmare is far from over, and even now the disaster is being extremely mishandled and blatantly ignored by plant operator company TEPCO and the Japanese government. In the event of an American Fukushima within California, which would in fact be much more devastating, there is truly no telling how much of a fatal blow would be dealt to humanity.

A private organization that monitors radiation data from network points across the United States issued email alerts today for two Western U.S. cities, Reno, Nev., and
St. George, Utah.
The alerts came from the Nuclear Emergency Tracking Center, which explains its mission is to provide radiation monitoring information from hundreds of sites in Japan and the U.S., including those run by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The warning pinpointed an area “of concern” in St. George, Utah, where background radiation levels more than doubled today from the typical reading.
In Reno, “the current background radiation level has increased suddenly by more than 200 points from the typical average.”
The report said the “counts per minute” at St. George reach an all-time high of 456, while the average is 222 with a normal deviation of 55.
In Reno, the CPM suddenly surged to 462. The all time high is 542. The average is 279 with a deviation of 56.2.
NETC.com founder Harlan Yother told WND he’s seeing more and more surges of radiation. Levels have risen along the West Coast, then moved east. The movement always follows by two or three days a rise in levels in Japan, home of the Fukushima nuclear reactor disaster in 2011, he said.
A previous alert, Nov. 26, cited the Fukishima nuclear disaster, where a power plant was struck first by an earthquake, then by a tidal wave created by the undersea quake.
Several of the reactors at Fukushima melted down and exploded, releasing massive doses of radiation into the air and water.

Fukushima Radiation; Marine biologists now telling me there’s been a change in radioactive material coming from Fukushima — More and more strontium being detected in samples, not just cesium — Is gov’t testing for it… is it in our food?
Journalist from Switzerland: I talked to some marine biologists a few days ago and they told me that in their samples they see a change in the mix of radionuclides. They’re saying proportionally there’s more and more strontium, not just cesium. The food checking here is purely on cesium, under the assumption there is very little else. But are the Japanese authorities actually measuring the right thing if they’re only focusing on Cesium. Is strontium also in our food? And I don’t know what else which is simply not measured?

Fish testing at 124 times over radiation limit caught off FukushimaFish with deadly levels of radioactive cesium have been caught just off the coast of Fukushima prefecture, as scientists continue to assess the damage caused to the marine food chain by the 2011 nuclear disaster.
One of the samples of the 37 black sea bream specimens caught some 37 kilometers south of the crippled power plant tested at 12,400 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium, making it 124 times deadlier than the threshold considered safe for human consumption, Japan’s Fisheries Research Agency announced.
The samples were caught at the mouth of the Niidagawa river in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, on November 17. Two other fish caught there also tested non-safe for human consumption, showing radiations levels of 426 and 197 becquerels per kilogram. The rest of the fish were reportedly within safety limits.
Black sea bream are currently restricted from being fished in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures and sold for human consumption, as scientists from the Fisheries Research Agency say they plan to investigate the source of the contamination further.
